GIFT
 FUNCTION WITH FASHION
Practical is key in 2018. Functional gifting is not something new— hydration bottles, gourmet kitchenware, stationery and myriad other products that are practical with fashion air have been trending for some time. However, the category is expanding, and new products have brought technical products into the gift realm.
“We want to give gifts we feel are going to keep people safe,” J. Brandes’ Luna said, noting that products like pepper spray and personal alarms with a little bit of fashion sense can be inexpensive and sensible gifts.
Tech gadgets that make staying connected easier are also on trend in the J. Brandes showroom. “Eighty-seven percent of Millennials are connected to two to four gadgets. Technology isn’t going away,” she added. Whether it’s phone cases, daily planners with a charging bank or cords that make charging easier, retailers could bene t from carrying some form of technology-related products in their stores.
Being practical can be pretty too. Home collections that are versatile and mix and match give customers the exibility to pick the pieces that work with their existing style. According to Garry Schermann, SVP of sales at Creative Co-op, the company is designing lines for the consumer of any generation who is looking for products that are pretty, uncomplicated and t into any home style.

  NEW WAVE ENTERTAINING
Smaller homes, open oor plans, comfort living... Formal dinner parties are no longer in vogue for many consumers, replaced by more casual gatherings that—Surprise!—o er a relaxed atmosphere that foster interaction. Instead of full dinners, for example, a
party might consist of wine and tapas or charcuterie trays, foods that allow friends and family to mingle. Consumers, particularly Millennials, want products that facilitate this type of entertaining.
“There have been really big changes in our industry because of how people entertain,” said Ivystone’s Loving. “So many products— candles, tabletop, food and more—touch the entertainment part of our industry.”
