A s this next generation of consumers enters its home
buying and renovating years,
product development teams and manufacturers have been tasked with introducing new designs and  xtures that meet the Millennial criteria.
“Millennials are really design-oriented,” said Jeanne-Marie Gand, VP, Marketing for the Hubbardton Forge family of lighting brands, including Synchronicity and the company’s Millennial-focused brand, Vermont Modern. “They also want to know what they are spending their money on.”
From a value standpoint, Millennials are not necessarily looking for the lowest pricing. It’s more about the value the product
adds to their homes and lives. Quality and versatility are key components of value
for Millennials. This is not a “throw-away” generation. They are conscious of how the products they purchase are crafted, and they have a deference to the environment. The advancement of LED technology, for example, is something Millennials are interested in from the standpoint of product longevity
and a low impact on the environment. Companies such as Hubbardton Forge, which manufactures in the United States and strives for a low carbon footprint, have an edge with Millennial consumers.
ECLECTIC DESIGN POINTS
As is often the case with any generation, Millennials have style points that impact their purchases. They are looking for design that re ects their personalities, which opens the door to an eclectic array of styles. Lighting that resonates with Millennials is varied; however, some key design themes seem to stand out.
Contemporary design or mid-century modern are styles that this generation gravitates toward in lighting as well as in other home design spaces. They are looking for clean lines that reference familiar silhouettes, but with a twist that creates
a modern element or becomes a conversation piece.
