LIGHTING UP RETAIL MERCHANDISING AND INSPIRATION
BY DIANE FALVEY
P aul Thompson is a retail merchandising expert. Founder of Paul Thompson Signature, Design Solutions for Interiors, Thompson focuses on design and visual merchandising in the home and gift industry, both at the showroom and retail
level. This January, Thompson brings his many years of experience to January’s Lightovation Market, where he’ll take lighting retailers on two magical merchandising tours of lighting manufacturer showrooms, sharing his merchandising expertise along the way.
We spoke with Paul ahead of Market for some trend and merchandising insights that work for any home-focused independent retail store.
Diane Falvey: What are some of the staple categories and current lighting trends retailers should pay attention to?
Paul ompson: You have to carry “over dining” lights. There
has to be bedside lighting; it can be table lamps, paired lamps or wall-mounted lights—but they should be a ordable and have style direction. Many companies make fashion statements here, and that creates gift opportunities for lighting as well. From a style perspective, we are seeing more contemporary lighting.
Outdoor lighting is huge today. We are seeing high-end outdoor lighting applications even in moderate homes. It’s architecturally appealing, as well as functional. Outdoor lighting keeps the home secure. Security is a primary driver for a lot of lighting. We’ve really seen growth in this category in the last 10 years. It’s cost-e cient. You can run landscape lighting for pennies a day.
Technology has changed how we view light. Today, we have a di erent understanding of lighting and how we want to live. New bulb technology really changes the ambience of a room with adaptability of colors and mood. The lighting market has grown because we care about fashion and renovation in the home.
